There's no need to worry, however. If the car does collide with us, it's likely to take tens of millions of years, and there's only a 6 per cent chance it will hit Earth in the next millions of years.

But that doesn't mean we'll have to wait all that time before it gets close to us. The initial orbit of the car will see it pass by the Earth many times, including a close encounter scheduled for 2091.

Elon Musk’s aerospace company launched its massive Falcon Heavy rocket into space on February 6th. It was an incredible feat. 

The Falcon Heavy’s 27 rockets propelled the huge craft gracefully as it barreled toward and then broke through the Earth’s atmosphere. While the rocket’s center core didn’t touch back down as expected, both side boosters separated perfectly and landed on their targets so they can be reused in subsequent launches. There’s precious little question that the launch was a resounding success, as was the release of the Falcon Heavy’s main payload: Elon Musk’s personal Tesla Roadster and its mannequin pilot Starman.

Pictured in the photo at the top of this post, Starman and his electric-car-turned-spacecraft were equipped with cameras that live-streamed the car’s journey as it floated through space. Unfortunately, the Roadster’s transmission didn’t last quite as long as expected. The batteries were expected to broadcast for at least 12 hours, but they ended up dying after only 4 hours of transmission. Sadly, that left space enthusiasts in the dark, wondering how Starman was doing as he piloted his convertible through the cosmos.

Sadly, the Roadster’s onboard cameras will never begin transmitting again

Ever wonder what the computer-generated Transformer robots in director Michael Bay's movies would look like in real life? A Turkish company has the answer, with a fully functional Transformer prototype In a series of videos, the company Letvision unveiled a transforming robot built from a BMW 3 Series coupe. Letrons, as the prototype is called, is controlled via a remote and can be seen driving and transforming in the video. It took a team of 12 engineers and four supporting technicians eight months to complete the prototype, Letvision officials said on the company's website.

In the video, an operator appears to use the remote control to drive the Letrons vehicle across a lot before initiating the machine's transformation. As the BMW slowly unfolds, a robot is revealed and stands tall. The operator also demonstrates the robot's actions, by moving its head and arms Though the Transformers from the TV series and films were able to walk, Letvision said walking functionality was not developed for the prototype. However, this capability "can be added if a reasonable funding is provided for a new research and development," the company said.

There's no information yet on how much these real-life Transformers could cost or when they'll be available for purchase. But the company said it is planning a full line of transforming cars to join the bright-red Letrons, likely including an array of colors and body styles.

Gary McKinnon

Gary McKinnon was known by his Internet handle, “Solo.” Using that name, he coordinated what would become the largest military computer hack of all time. The allegations are that he, over a 13-month period from February 2001 to March 2002, illegally gained access to 97 computers belonging to the U.S. Armed Forces and NASA.

McKinnon claimed that he was only searching for information related to free energy suppression and UFO activity cover-ups. But according to U.S. authorities, he deleted a number of critical files, rendering over 300 computers inoperable and resulting in over $700,000 in damages.

Being of Scottish descent and operating out of the United Kingdom, McKinnon was able to dodge the American government for a time. As of today, he continues to fight against extradition to the United States.

Kevin Poulsen

Kevin Poulsen, also known as “Dark Dante,” gained his fifteen minutes of fame by utilizing his intricate knowledge of telephone systems. At one point, he hacked a radio station’s phone lines and fixed himself as the winning caller, earning him a brand new Porsche. According to media, he was called the “Hannibal Lecter of computer crime.”

He then earned his way onto the FBI’s wanted list when he hacked into federal systems and stole wiretap information. Funny enough, he was later captured in a supermarket and sentenced to 51 months in prison, as well paying $56,000 in restitution.

Like Kevin Mitnick, Poulsen changed his ways after being released from prison. He began working as a journalist and is now a senior editor for Wired News. At one point, he even helped law enforcement to identify 744 sex offenders on MySpace

Albert Gonzalez

Albert Gonzalez paved his way to Internet fame when he collected over 170 million credit card and ATM card numbers over a period of 2 years. Yep. That’s equal to a little over half the population of the United States.

Gonzalez started off as the leader of a hacker group known as ShadowCrew. This group would go on to steal 1.5 million credit card numbers and sell them online for profit. ShadowCrew also fabricated fraudulent passports, health insurance cards, and birth certificates for identity theft crimes totaling $4.3 million stolen.

The big bucks wouldn’t come until later, when Gonzalez hacked into the databases of TJX Companies and Heartland Payment Systems for their stored credit card numbers. In 2010, Gonzalez was sentenced to prison for 20 years (2 sentences of 20 years to be served out simultaneously).

Kevin Mitnick

Kevin Mitnick’s journey as a computer hacker has been so interesting and compelling that the U.S. Department of Justice called him the “most wanted computer criminal in U.S. history.” His story is so wild that it was the basis for two featured films.

What did he do? After serving a year in prison for hacking into the Digital Equipment Corporation’s network, he was let out for 3 years of supervised release. Near the end of that period, however, he fled and went on a 2.5-year hacking spree that involved breaching the national defense warning system and stealing corporate secrets.

Mitnick was eventually caught and convicted, ending with a 5-year prison sentence. After serving those years fully, he became a consultant and public speaker for computer security. he now runs Mitnick Security Consulting, LLC.

Jonathan James

Jonathan James was known as “c0mrade” on the Internet. What is his ticket to fame? He was convicted and sent to prison for hacking in the United States–all while he was still a minor. At only fifteen years of age, he managed to hack into a number of networks, including those belonging to Bell South, Miami-Dade, the U.S. Department of Defense, and NASA.

Yes, James hacked into NASA’s network and downloaded enough source code to learn how the International Space Station worked. The total value of the downloaded assets equaled $1.7 million. To add insult to injury, NASA had to shut down their network for three whole weeks while they investigated the breach, which cost them $41,000.

The story of James has a tragic ending, however. In 2007, a number of high profile companies fell victim to a massive wave of malicious network attacks. Even though James denied any involvement, he was suspected and investigated. In 2008, James committed suicide, believing he would be convicted of crimes that he did not commit.

Along with adding to the trove of research that shows these games can improve eye-hand coordination and reaction time, this finding shows the potential for novel virtual approaches to helping people who lose memory as they age or suffer from dementia.

For their research, University of California-Irvine neurobiologists Craig Stark and Dane Clemenson recruited non-gamer college students to play either a video game with a passive, two-dimensional environment or one with an intricate, 3D setting for 30 minutes per day over two weeks.

Before and after the two-week period, the students took memory tests that engaged the brain's hippocampus, the region associated with complex learning and memory.

They were given a series of pictures of everyday objects to study. Then they were shown images of the same objects, new ones and others that differed slightly from the original items and asked to categorize them.

Recognition of the slightly altered images requires the hippocampus, Stark said.Students playing the video game improved their scores on the memory test, while the 2D gamers did not. Memory performance increased by 12 percent, the same amount it normally decreases between the ages of 45 and 70.

"First, the 3D games have a few things the 2D ones do not. They've got a lot more spatial information in there to explore. Second, they're much more complex, with a lot more information to learn Either way, we know this kind of learning and memory not only stimulates but requires the hippocampus," he added.

The study appeared in The Journal of Neuroscience.

A new method of delivering data, which uses the visible spectrum rather than radio waves, has been tested in a working office.

Li-fi can deliver internet access 100 times faster than traditional wi-fi, offering speeds of up to 1Gbps (gigabit per second).
It requires a light source, such as a standard LED bulb, an internet connection and a photo detector.
It was tested this week by Estonian start-up Velmenni, in Tallinn.
Velmenni used a li-fi-enabled light bulb to transmit data at speeds of 10Gbps. Laboratory tests have shown theoretical speeds of up to 224Gbps.
It was tested in an office, to allow workers to access the internet and in an industrial space, where it provided a smart lighting solution.
Light might be the preferred option for transmitting data over long distances via cables, but when it comes to short range wireless, radio waves rule in the form of Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Now Mexican company Sisoft, working with researchers from the Autonomous Technological Institute of Mexico (ITAM), has developed a wireless technology that transmits data in visible light emitted from LED lamps, while lighting the room at the same time. Called Li-Fi, which is short for light fidelity, the technology is what is known as Visible Light Communication (VLC). Unlike infrared based system. VLC involves transmitting data using light visible to the human eye. In this case it is transmitted as intermittent, imperceptible flickers of light emitted by LEDs. The team started out with audio, cabling up a protoboard table to a smartphone via its 3.5 mm audio jack. The protoboard table converted the audio signal into an optical signal that is transmitted by a special emitter across the spectrum of light generated by an LED lamp. At the receiving end, a receptor located in a speaker captured the signal and converted it back into an audio signal that was played by the speaker.

For wireless internet transmission, the principle is the same but makes use of a receptor device designed to be placed above a router. The router incorporates an LED lamp to transmit data so anyone falling within the halo of light emitted by the LED will be in range. However, only those with a receptor/transmitter device will be able to send and receive the signal.

The Sisoft team says it has used the technology to transmit audio, video and internet at rates of up to 10 gigabits per second. This is an improvement over similar Li-Fi systems developed at  siemens and pennsylvania state university that achieved transfer rates of 500 Mbps and 1.6 Gbps, respectively.

In addition to its impressive transfer rate, Sisoft also highlights other benefits of the technology. Since the data is transferred via light, there is no way to hack it, making it safer, (although no mention is made of how easy it would be to take a peek at the data someone else is receiving). Additionally, it could be used in areas such as hospitals where radiation equipment can block or disrupt wireless signals. And of course, it provides illumination at the same time.

its third installation – the much-hyped Diablo III – might have left you with a bit of a grimace: it was damn hard.

I can report to you from the front lines of playing the game that yes, it was in fact as hard as discussed, and yes, it was in fact as long as rumored. I in fact failed to complete the game, after realizing that if one more of those flying  monsters killed me I was set to punch a hole through my monitor. But I digress.

One of the reasons that Diablo III was harder than it might have -been was its inclusion of some anti-macro technology, blocking users from running short scripts to help them launch repeat actions to speed along their gameplay. That was a no in the game, leading to more button mashing and general frustration THE GILA from GX gaming  that has a- surprising claim: it has both a CPU and a block of memory on-board, allowing it the capability to to get around certain in-game restrictions on macros. This means that, in theory, you could turn the tables on Diablo III and let you combo-power your way through the game with the click of a pre-programed button. And the mouse has oodles of them, with profile switching to allow you to jump from game to game, sans the need to re-code.....

The only real downside to the Gila is that it appears to be a mouse crossed with a Transformer that recently went through a blender the hard way...

The thing will set you back about $100, but is currently out of stock on Amazon. It’s a relatively new mouse, which we first spotted last night at CES Unveiled. Hello from Las Vega..
